Gene P. Silvestri is a U.S. Army disabled transgender veteran, and he currently serves as the Vice President, Social Media Director, and Assistant Website Director for The Transgender American Veterans Association (TAVA). In 2003, he received an honorable medical discharge from the U.S. Army due to sustaining multiple service-connected injuries. Long periods of isolation, chronic physical pain, PTSD and anxiety followed. In 2010, Gene became involved with the Sacramento County veteran service organization as a local transgender veteran liaison. Since then, Gene has served on the board of the Sacramento Valley Veterans, his local chapter of the American Veterans For Equal Rights (AVER). He is a Life member of The Disabled American Veterans (DAV). He served as committee member for the CalVet LGBT Veterans Leadership Forum, the first-statewide event of its kind and participated on the first VA Northern California Health Care System’s LGBT Primary Care veteran panel. Gene continues to advocate on behalf of LGBT veterans locally and nationally. He currently is part of the VA Northern California LGBT Advocacy Group, providing advocacy, outreach and education for veterans and VA staff. Due to his unique experiences in navigating VA health care and the Veterans Benefits Administration, Gene brings an authentic dedication to assisting any veteran. His experiences as a married, transgender male veteran provide him with a unique perspective and wide range of knowledge concerning VA benefits and health care policies and directives.
